Executing a mass vaccination program at global scale is an extremely rare scenario. Mass vaccination has been beneficial in eradicating diseases previously, especially at the time of pandemics, thus preventing millions of deaths across the globe annually. In the current COVID-19 scenario, mass vaccination appears to be the only solution to control the spread of the disease and subsequent mortality by acquiring herd immunity.
Mass vaccination campaigns are likely to face a lot of challenges such as urgent need for public awareness, training of healthcare professionals, safety monitoring and many more. Proper vaccine deployment strategies include a targeted approach towards expeditious implementation, consistent awareness campaigns and ground level training initiatives to ensure wider coverage for the success of COVID-19 mass vaccination program.
In this review article, we have highlighted the key foreseeable challenges in mass vaccination campaigns specific to COVID-19 and the new updates on potential vaccines.
